Performs highly detailed assignments and special projects; oversees the daily preventative maintenance (PM), on school buses, trucks, and grounds maintenance equipment and conduct training; supervises mechanics. This is an exempt position where bus driving may be required.

Job Description: Essential Position Functions

• Arranges for the procurement of supplies and parts necessary to support daily transportation operations
• Assists in the development of policies and practices related to Fleet Management
• Assists the Director for Transportation in developing and implementing staff training
• Attends all required department staff meetings
• Attends professional meetings, seminars, and workshops
• Carries out and enforces appropriate local, state, and federal laws and regulations
• Completes all required forms and materials accurately such as repair orders, inspection forms, defect reports, and accident reports
• Creates a safe work environment for staff success
• Develops fleet of procedures, guidelines, information for vehicle maintenance, garage safety, vehicle purchase, disposal, and replacement plans
• Develops specifications for replacement shop equipment and shop tools
• Directly supervises the performance, conduct, and attendance of mechanics
• Ensures compliance with established work rules
• Ensures requirements and deadlines of annual inspections are met consistently
• Ensures that the terminal grounds are clear of snow and ice
• Establishes and carries out a continuing safety education program
• Establishes and maintains a system for monitoring the mechanics’ driving records, license status, and first aid training
• Establishes contingency plans for inclement weather operations ensuring that buses are prepared and operational upon demand
• Maintains a high level of shop cleanliness and emphasizes shop safety
• Maintains Automotive Service of Excellence (ASE) records, a requirement of all mechanics is provided to the mechanics
• Maintains communication with Transportation staff, schools, district staff, and members of the public
• Maintains records required by Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and that they are valid and up to date
• Maintains records required for state vehicle emission inspections and validates that inspections are properly completed and current and ensures all vehicles are licensed properly
• Meets the essential functions for Bus Driver when operating in that capacity
• Monitors fuel system software, fuel site controllers, and fuel island terminals
• Monitors service and repair work to ensure that it is timely and completed properly at each terminal and during each shift
• Monitors working conditions and ensures that maintenance staff work safely, following required regulations at all times
• Oversees and maintain accurate records and reports of all preventative maintenance and annuals on school busses, trucks, and multi-function vehicles
• Oversees fleet expenditures; regularly reviews budget status; designated as approval authority for applicable budget expenditures
• Oversees the development of formal procedures to service and maintain vehicles
• Plans and conducts high quality, effective in-service training program for all maintenance staff members prior to the start of each school year
• Problem solves, cross trains, and shares information with other team members
• Provides oversight and supervision to the Parts/Tool Room
• Responsible for inspecting staff member’s work as necessary
• Reviews tool/equipment requirements and ensures items are on hand or on order
• Serves as subject matter expert on fleet maintenance
• Submits reports to various administrative levels on the status of maintenance operations
• Supports staff appreciation/recognition programs
• Updates and monitors vehicle parts and inventories
• Uses technology to track maintenance, defect reporting, road calls, planned maintenance programs, fuel and oil modules, and repair history
• Verifies that proper daily vehicle inspections by the operator take place and any reported mechanical defects are turned in to the foreman for repairs
• Verifies/approves time worked by mechanics
• Works on special projects within the parameters of maintenance, safety, training of mechanics, and driver training relating to usage of the vehicle
• Works with dispatcher in assigning mechanics to bus routes when needed
• Works with dispatcher in assigning substitute buses as required

• Knowledge and retention of district traffic patterns and the local road network

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
• Master ASE Certification in School Bus, other ASE Certifications desired in Auto, Truck, and Advanced Engine Performance
• 5 years of leadership and supervisory experience in the maintenance/transportation sector
• Must possess an acceptable driving record
• Must qualify for district’s Vehicle Operator License Insurance
• Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, a Colorado Commercial Driver’s License, Type BP2-S (School Bus License) upon employment
• Must pass Department of Transportation physical requirements
• Must possess, or be able to obtain and renew/maintain CPR and First Aid certification
• Must complete the District 20 Mountain Driving Instruction and Special Education Training
• Maintain certification in special needs as necessary if driving special education students
• Must meet all requirements of local, state, and federal regulations for controlled substance testing including pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug and alcohol testing

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or higher
• Completion of an accredited Automotive/Fleet Management program

Reports To Director for Transportation Terms of Employment 230-day position Salary
The district offers a comprehensive compensation package. Placement is dependent upon experience at Staff Specialist Salary Level VI with a starting salary of $53,750. The district also offers medical benefits, life insurance, and salary benefit dollars if an individual chooses not to take the medical benefits plan.
